Many military installations around the country provide recreational lodging as a travel option. Depending on size and location, these lodgings can include everything from cabins, cottages and trailers to RV parks with hookups to campgrounds. Here is a state-by-state listing with contact information that you can use when planning your next trip. We recommend that you always check with the facility before traveling as requirements and rates may change.

 

Alabama

Follow Patton Road approximately 7 miles to stop sign at Buxton Road. Turn right on Buxton Road, go 2.5 miles to Shields Road, turn left. Shields Road takes you to the Tennessee River and the campground. The northwest corner of Buxton and Shields is the location of the dump station.

Note: The Island is cited as one of the ten most globally important sites for bird migration. The Dauphin Island Audubon Bird Sanctuary offers 160 acres of trails, a freshwater lake, swamp, sand dunes and beach.
Directions: The Park and Beach facilities on Dauphin Island are accessable from I-10 using exit 17, state hwy 193 to the South. Driving, one will encounter two stop signs for the 23 mile trek to the Island. After crossing the four mile long Dauphin Island Bridge, Hwy 193 ends at the Water Tower Intersection. Ft. Gaines, the campground and the bird sanctuary are to the East; the fishing pier and beaches are to the West.

Note: Golden Age Passport NOT accepted. Office is open from Monday - Friday from 0700 - 1600 hours. After hours and on week-ends there is an after hours sign in located at the front door of the office. The camp ranger lives near the office in site 5 and normally is there and will sign you in anytime, week-ends included. They normally have spaces for overnighters. They have a laundry room, which has 2 washers and 2 dryers and a bathhouse with showers. There are two lakes at the Campground with fishing allowed for the campground residents. No license or permit required while staying in the campground. There is very little shade on the sites so they are sunny, each full hook-up site has a covered patio with table. There is also a above ground grill at each site. Over flow sites have a table and above ground grill available.
Directions: To Campsite: If you exit off I-65 North bound onto Bell street, via the Herron exit you enter the Bell Street gate. This will put you on Maxwell Blvd. You then continue on for about one and half miles which where basically, Maxwell Blvd ends, then turn left onto Kelly St. Continue on Kelly until it ends, turn right onto March St and continue around until you see the Campgrounds on the left. Now if you come in off I-65 south bound or off I-85 south bound onto Day street, you enter the base at the Day Street gate. Once on base, you will come to a traffic light, turn left, you will go to the very next street, past the service station, turn left. You will pass the BX and parking lot on your right. Go to the Yield sign and turn left. That puts you onto Kelly Street. You continue about a quarter mile and turn right onto March St. follow that around until you see the camp on the left. Sign in at the office.

Directions: Traveling South on the Richardson Highway, the trip is approximately 260 miles from Fort Greely. About 5 miles before arriving in Valdez, turn right onto Airport Road (a major intersection with a flashing yellow light). Travel 3 miles to the campground.

Directions: From West: Exit I-10 N at Alvernon Way (Exit 265). Follow road approx. 1.9 miles onto Golf Links Rd. Right on Craycroft Rd. Go thru main gate. Left on Quijota Blvd to FamCamp office on right side of street (across street from the camp site).
 
Luke AFB - Ft. Tuthill Recreation Area

Directions: Recreation Area for Luke Air Force Base (Glendale, AZ), 138 miles to the southwest. Directions after I-17 (Exit 337) are confusing. Add: From stop sign at top of exit ramp, head west and stay in right lane. At next stop sign go straight ahead. There's a small, wooden sign on the right that says, "Fort Tuthill." Continue straight for about 500 yards and take first left (look for sign). Check-in at Lodge on right (park in dirt lot across the street just before reaching lodge).

Directions: From I-8, take Exit 115 and follow signs to AZ-85 South and Ajo. After gate check-in, take first right turn (sign to Fam Camp) and you'll be on Fourth St. Go past housing area and you'll see campground on the right. Enter campground at Centipede St. and pick an unused site. Check-in with site number at Desert Sands Inn lodging office (Bldg 4300) at Fourth and "I" streets, diagonally across from campground. From November through March check in with host/hostess in campground.

Directions: Located on Hwy 198 between 99 & I-5, 6 mi. west of Lemoore. From 99, turn off on 198 and keep going through the town of Lemoore until you see the base on the right. From I5 coming from the north, it is 20 miles from the turnoff on 198. From the south, you can turn off at hwy 41 to 198, where you will go west. We used the Avenal Cut, which is confusing if you don’t know the area—there is a sign there saying NAS Lemoore exit. You must turn left at the exit end, cross the freeway, go past the freeway entrance for southbound I5, and turn left several yards ahead. Follow that road back across the freeway, a 2 lane through the agricultural area, for about 17 miles. There will be a sign for 198, where you will go west for about a mile to the main gate.

Directions: From I-275 (westbound), take exit 41 A/B. Follow Dale Mabry Highway south for 6.3 miles to main gate of MacDill AFB. Stay on N. Boundary Ave. (Dale Mabry changes to N. Boundary and turns east on base) past two traffic lights. As the road turns right be in the left lane. At the traffic light in this curve, turn left for a very short distance, then turn right onto Bayshore Blvd, immediately get into center lane as right lane becomes "Right turn only". Follow Bayshore for several miles until it curves right and becomes Golf Course Ave. (FAM-Camp sign at this point). Follow Golf Course Ave. west until it Y's with Marina Bay Dr. (FAM Camp sign here). Go left onto Marina Bay Drive into FAM Camp. At this light take a left turn onto US 60 West, go about 2.5 miles. Camp Carlson is at the bottom of the hill on the right side of the road. At the turn in, stay to the right. The office is the first building you will see.

Once you have been cleared at the gate, take O'Brien Road to Mapes Road. Turn left onto Mapes Road. Follow Mapes Road to the fifth stop light and turn right onto Ernie Pyle Road. Go to the stop sign and turn right onto Llewellyn Avenue. Go approximately ¼ of a mile and turn left onto Wilson Street (the sign for Wilson is on the opposite side of Llewellyn). A family room with kitchen extras, TV, free WIFI access for your computer in the family room, stair stepper, bike, two ellipticals and two treadmills, keeps guests comfortable, in addition to the laundry area, public restroom and shower facilities, and small playground. Two outside pavilion areas with built-ins grills are provided for parties or small get-togethers. A doggie walk is available; however patrons may walk their pets wherever they wish. Management does ask that you pick up after them as a courtesy to others.

Getting there from the west: As you travel east on I-10 E/US-180 E toward El Paso. Take the NM-404 exit, exit 162, toward ANTHONY/CHAPARRAL (just north of the Texas/New Mexico state line). Exit onto NM-404/E OHara Rd and travel east 22 miles. Turn right onto NM-213 (Crossing into TEXAS). NM-213 becomes MARTIN LUTHER KING JR BLVD/FM 3255 S. Merge onto US-54 W. Take exit 25 toward ELLERTHORPE AVE/BROADDUS AVE. From Gateway Blvd S, turn right onto ELLERTHORPE AVE. The RV Park will be one block to your left.--OR--Proceed through El Paso on I-10 E. On Challenger drive take a left and follow Challenger until you come to the perimeter road. Take a left and the FAM Camp will be on your right. Directions: The Westport Recreation Park is located at Grays Harbor Lighthouse, Westport, Washington. Westport is located 20 miles south of Aberdeen, WA, and 130 miles south of Seattle, WA. From Seattle: Take I-5 southbound towards Portland. Take the US-101 North exit (Exit 104) towards Aberdeen/Port Angeles. Merge onto US-101 N. Take WA-8 W towards Montesano/Aberdeen. WA-8 W becomes US-12 W. US-12 W becomes US 101 N. Upon arrival in Aberdeen, follow the directional signs to US-105 S. Upon arrival in Westport, take a right on South Montesano Street. Continue straight on Hwy 21 for approximately 9 miles to Fort McCoy. Go past the Main Gate entrance and turn right at the sign for Pine View Campground and Whitetail Ridge Ski Area and follow signs.

Season: Peak season is mid-May through Labor Day. FAM CAMP is winterized by mid-September. Electrical hookups are available after that time but water and sewer are not.

Directions: On base, 6205 15th Cavalry. The FAM Camp Office is located in the new hospitality Center on the northeast side of the camp. Enjoy modern conveniences such as handicap accessible restrooms and complete laundry facilities. The traditional red brick closely resembles many of the century-old buildings located throughout the base.
